The first mention of a briard dogs in the literature concerns 12 century. For today in France there are 14 versions of sheep-dogs, most widespread of them - a briard and a beauceron. The name "a briard a sheepdog" for a designation of the French sheep-dog with a long wool has appeared in 1809.

At exhibitions briards have been shown in 1863. Officially the first representative of breed a briard has been registered in 1885 when the French breeding book has been created. 200 dogs have been brought in this first year of its existence in it, and the briard has got to number of those of 20 lucky beggars which did not represent the hunting breeds.

The history of factory breed has begun later, and briards are obliged by the modern kind of selection of 1895-96 when the Club of fans of the French sheepdogs has been formed. The first standard has been accepted in 1897. In a current of the last centuries selection of breeding dogs was conducted exclusively on working qualities - the French peasants appearance of their sheep-dogs did not interest.

In Ukraine there is a briard club. In Baltic, Belarus separate copies are noted. In Russia there are some stable nurseries. Once a year in Moscow is spent a national exhibition of briards (usual number of participants nearby 50), and regional exhibitions in separate clubs (from 5 to 25 participants).

The Briard is included into the list of the breeds having at all exhibitions working class. Undoubtedly, the livestock is not enough for correct breeding work, the dog is rare and at exhibitions, and, especially, at competitions. As well as many other breeds, have a cultivation problem under the external data to the detriment of mentality.
