The broholmer or the Old Danish dog is the powerful heavy dog used in the past for persecution of big game (a bear or a wild boar). The broholmer has given rise to many breeds a mastiff-shaped of dogs.

Possibly, the broholmer as breed was generated in 19 century. Breed originates from such breeds as an English mastiff and a German mastiff.

At one time the broholmer has practically disappeared, as need for such large dogs was gone. Across all Denmark last broholmers have been collected and thanks to thoroughbred cultivation breed has revived.
