The breed name has arisen, possibly, from application of a collie: these dogs grazed dark Scottish sheep who named Colley.

Earlier collies was the shepherd's dog, she watched herd and protected sheep from predators. For many years collies it was used as purely working dog. It is easily trained and at one time it even used as a saving dog on water.

Collies of old, shepherd's type were a bit less, with wider head and a short muzzle. The initial type collies now is a Welsh sheepdog.

A bit later collies have been mixed with russian fleet, as has affected appearance change: dogs became above, the muzzle became extended and narrow. Working shepherd's collies and the received hybrids were divided and began to get divorced on separate branches.

On the native land breed was extraordinary popular thanks to queen Victoria. She very much loved these dogs, and held collies in Zamke Balmora in Scotland. Interest of the queen to these dogs has impulsed improbable popularity of a collie.
