The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog(Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund) was a draught dog at dealers, the shepherd at butchers and domestic sentry at peasants. He could be seen with wanderers because they needed to transport hard loaded vehicle on the country, and the dog of such sizes quite approached for this work.
At dogs of this version a short wool that too is very convenient and is practical. It is easy to look after it, it quickly dries up and with it not hot in warm weather. Then as watchmen preferred black dogs.
When the dealer had to leave for a while a vehicle without supervision, it was not meaningful to worry, if in it the dog has been harnessed. - to hunters behind purses - it inspired in the sizes to thieves and robbers fear.
Possibly, big Swiss sennenhund also would not be allocated in separate breed if in the end of 19 centuries the Swiss film logic Society based in 1883, was not engaged in selection Bern Berner Sennenhund. It is connected by that till this period similarity with Berner Sennenhund was very great.
And it in the beginning of 19 centuries became very well-known thanks to stories about Berri who has saved lives of many people. Outside of Switzerland these dogs dispersed under very high price, and all other, similar to the Bern sennenhunds, were on sale precisely also.
Similarity was possible thanks to that both these country dogs came from one big area. But selectors selected only ryzhe-white dogs as Berner Sennenhund. Today similarity already is less, because right after allocation Berner Sennenhund in separate breed selection took absolutely other course - factory owners began to select larger, rough dogs with the big heads.
Â

Frants Shertenljajb, the factory owner of the Bern sennenhunds, has opened "a Smoouth Bern sennenhund" and in 1908 has brought it on an exhibition in Langental. Professor Hajm has seen a new version of breed in this dog. He has been assured that it is other breed, and has entitled it - the big Swiss sennenhund.
Cultivation of the big Swisses began slow enough rates because at experts was not enough material for work - such dogs was not so easily to find. So up to 1936 still resulted the dogs found somewhere and wrote down them as representatives of breed. And speech still went about a Smoouth Bern sennenhund because among puppies of one dung were both Smoouth and dogs with a long wool.
Since 1912 cultivation in Switzerland was under the control "Club of the Big Swiss Sennenhunds". Till 1922 in the book of family trees it was brought no more than eleven dogs. Selection had very small base. Therefore in 1956 crossing with the Bern sennenhund has been made. As a result of pairing of Male Berner Sennenhund with the girl of the big Swiss on light there were six Smoouth puppies with beautiful colours and a correct colour.
During the Second World War the Swiss army used dogs as draught animals. For performance of such tasks the Big Swiss Sennenhunds especially well approached. So these dogs almost independently, without a conductor brought on front in the bags adhered to a back, ammunition and the foodstuffs.
The big Swiss sennenhund The big Swiss sennenhund is very clever and self-assured dog. Mentally counterbalanced and quiet. Having thrown one sight at a dog, it is possible to understand at once - before you a noble and courageous dog! They long mature. Outwardly the dog can already look very big and adult, but in a shower for the present remains the violent and fervent child.
The big Swiss sennenhund can show obstinacy. If he somewhere does not wish to go or something has bothered it, he can sit down or sprawl - and then already will help nothing. Thus will not work neither a bait, nor arrangements. To force it move further the vigorous word can. From the very beginning it is necessary to concern such behaviour of the pupil with patience and understanding.
The big Swiss sennenhund very good security guard, it completely can entrust territory and the house, and not to be afraid that someone in your absence will encroach on your property. It with bark welcomes visitors, with bark accompanies them to house doors, and then too keeps a distance.
So the terrible voice the big Swiss gains certain authority. As soon as someone approaches to the visitor from relatives he there and then starts to welcome the visitor friendly.
It is necessary to remember that, as well as the Bern sennenhund, a gross is first of all a family dog who constantly should contact to all members of a family. For the maintenance in an open-air cage they do not approach!
