The native land of this breed - Shetlendsky islands which lie in five miles to the north of Scotland. The most part of islands is used centuries exclusively as pastures for a pony, horned livestock and sheep. A climate severe, crude and sad with frequent storms and storm which all will sweep away all on the way.

By summer of herd were forwarded from one islands on others and remained under the supervision of small sheepdogs. It is known that the first shepherd's dogs - primogenitors Shelties - had a short dense wavy wool, round eyes, trailing ears and a tail bent on a back.
